Slate of Candidates:
Patrick Gannon: Patrick is a retired elementary school teacher. One of Patrick’s favorite activities as a teacher was reading captivating stories to his students. For the past several years, Patrick has actively explored the genre of oral storytelling. He has participated in numerous story swaps, storytelling concerts, and storytelling workshops.
A number of his oral stories originate from some of the classic stories he read to his students. Many of those stories have elements of humor, mystery, and wonder. He also has developed stories aimed at adult audiences. He is fond of stories which capture the bond between grandparent and grandchild.
For over three years, Patrick has been an active Board Member of the Portland Storytellers Guild. He is the Secretary, Membership Chair, and a logistical facilitator for story swaps, concerts, and workshops.
Edward Hershey: I have been excited and gratified by my first year as a guild member and look forward to promoting its work as a member of the board with special emphasis on audience development through marketing and publicity, fields I have worked in for the past three decades. One example: Call it beginner’s luck but I was instrumental in arranging for us to play a featured role in the City Club of Portland Friday Forum the week of “Tellabration” last fall with stories by Gene Tagaban and Chetter Galloway broadcast statewide on OPB as part of the presentation. Ukiah Marcus: I’m Ukiah Marcus. I am dad of 2 adult children and a psychotherapist. I have, over the years enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, telling stories to both my kids and my patients. Professionally, I believe storytelling to be a core aspect to our human being-ness. The telling of a cohesive, coherent story links our human experience to one other and gives meaning to our lives. What I believe I can bring to the guild is experience in creating and orchestrating a number of public workshops. These workshops demanded that I do marketing. Each one has met or surpassed my expectations for attendance.
