Leslie Slape, Storyteller
Leslie Slape is drawn to tales of interesting women, silly humor, unexpected twists, bravery, and journeys of the soul. She also knows quite a few tales about cats.

A dabbler in storytelling since childhood, she began performing in the Society for Creative Anachronism in 1982. She earned membership in the SCA's Order of the Laurel for excellence in storytelling performance. Her repertoire explores her multicultural ethnic heritage and includes myths, legends and folktales from Russia, Finland, Ireland, Scotland, Germany and other lands.

"You have a way of grabbing people and walking off with them.
I don't know where it comes from ... but it's amazing."

Storytelling judge, "The Triumphs of Oriana," an SCA bardic competition

She also writes and performs original tales, including "The Tale-Teller," which is the opening story in "The Healing Heart -- Families," a collection of healing stories and essays published in 2003. She co-wrote a play based on storytelling and myth, "The Time-Traveler's Story Guide to Planet Earth," which was produced in 1998 at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash.

She also writes and performs music, including a chilling ballad based on a Russian folktale, "The Vampire."

Leslie has taught storytelling classes and workshops to teachers, children and aspiring tellers for several years.

In her other life, she is the crime reporter for The Daily News in Longview. She and her husband, Max, have two teenagers.
