About the Teller

Norm Brecke is a spirited storyteller who loves a good story. Norm was an award-winning teacher, telling tales to his students daily before becoming a professional teller. After school, he taught storytelling skills to 3rd-5th grade students for 9 years.

Norm has told stories from British Columbia to Southern California; Oregon to South Carolina. He’s been a featured teller at the Powellswood (2012), Art of the Story (2017), Stone Soup (2018), and Florida (2021) storytelling festivals. Other career highlights were narrating for the Seattle Symphony (2012), telling at the Seattle Art Museum (2014), and programs at the National Storytelling Summit (2017 & 2018). Norm’s told in conventional venues; libraries, museums, schools, as well as unconventional places; Theo’s Chocolate, Toms Shoes, and almost everywhere in between. His CD The Rough Edge of the Ocean was a 2020 World Storytelling World Honor Winner.

Norm is a gifted teller for audiences young and old. Themed programs to fit the season or themes are available for seniors and students.

Workshops about generating personal story ideas, adding humor to programs, humor in folktales, and defining characters are available. Norm often does programs with his wife, Anne Rutherford.
Reviews/audience comments

"Energetic Norm Brecke has a great way with stories…and with kids!"

Dr. Margaret Read MacDonald, author, folklorist, storyteller.

“When Norm tells the world stops. His musical storytelling and use of dramatic voice draws people in and takes them to another place. He calls it ‘family storytelling’. We call it heaven for half an hour.”

Nancy Page, Former owner of Island Books, Mercer Island, WA.

"Your storytelling, it was terrific."

Jay O'Callahan, storyteller.

“Norm is an awesome storyteller. He has an amazing ability to tailor his programs to a variety of ages…keep them engaged and actively participating. A rare find, a true keep!”

Gina Dexter, Newport Children’s School Kid's Club Supervisor, Bellevue, WA.
